Round 2 of the BSB Superstock season took us to the legendary Donington Park, running the full GP circuit this weekend. I’ve only tackled the full layout once before during an endurance event, so I was still getting to grips with the additional section of track.
Friday – Free Practice
Friday brought FP1 and FP2. The morning session went well despite cooler air and track temps. As I grew more confident with the layout, my lap times steadily dropped. FP2 in the afternoon saw better conditions, and I made the most of it—pushing harder and setting a new personal best of 1:33.473.
Saturday – Qualifying
Saturday morning was time to dial it in during qualifying. Despite the cooler conditions, I felt much more comfortable with the full circuit. After a few key tweaks to the bike setup, I shaved more time off my PB, qualifying 33rd with a 1:32.662. Progress!
Sunday – Race Day
Sunday was race day. I lost my brakes fully on the warm up lap but managed to pump the leaver on the straight and managed to get the brakes back. I got a good start but lap one saw a first corner incident for other riders causing the next lap to proceed under safety car. During the safety car I was focusing on the brakes as they still didn't seem to be working at 100%. I got caught out by the safety car peeling into the pits and wasn't ready for the restart. I had to quickly get back on the power. The first few laps the brakes were coming back to me and the laptimes were coming back down near to my qualifying time. Unfortunately on lap 7 with adapting brakes I was caught out and I lost the front end at the Melbourne hairpin causing me to crash putting an end to my race this weekend.
Thankfully, my ARN Race Leathers and airbag system did exactly what they’re supposed to, and the bike escaped with minimal damage. We’ll get everything patched up in time for the next round at Silverstone this coming weekend.
Massive thanks to my pit crew for keeping everything running smoothly Dad, Hayden Killworth and Rik Stumps and to all my sponsors for their ongoing support.
